A New Painting.

Layers small

Let your tears come.  Let them water your soul.

~Eileen Mayhew

The title of this piece is: Layers.  Sometimes a cloud forms out of little pieces of worries and concerns in our mind. This cloud grows and grows until it becomes too heavy to stay in the air. That's when our cloud turns into rain. Little tears or big tears, they're all important in the seasons of the soul. When we allow ourselves to cry we're opening a little door for our pain to go away. This is what I have experienced personally. Fortunately, my sky is almost always clear, but when the big cloud forms I try not to be scared of it, I just let it be and think about what John Vance Cheney said:

"The soul would have no rainbow had the eyes no tears".

Embroidered Seed Bead Necklace.

Seed necklace detail 1 small

I keep working on the show for Puerto Rico because that's my priority right now. But I always like to keep a fun craft project going on the side. This necklace is one of those projects that I work on whenever I have a minute. Natalie was very involved in the color selection (I think that it shows). Diego was involved in trying to run away with my beads and needle :)

We're all happy with the final result. This necklace makes me smile. I'm wearing it right now and it looks beautiful. One day Natalie will wear it too, I will give it to her in a few years.

Happy Monday!

Elsita :)

Walking Thoughts.

Walking Thoughts small

Thinking is easy, acting is difficult, and to put one's thoughts into action is the most difficult thing in the world.
Johann Wolfgang von Goethe

The mind moves in the direction of our currently dominant thoughts.
Earl Nightingale

Our thoughts and imagination are the only real limits to our possibilities.
Orison Swett Marden

All that you accomplish or fail to accomplish with your life is the direct result of your thoughts.
James Allen

The mind is everything. What you think you become.
Buddha

This is my latest painting, also for the show in Puerto Rico in December. This piece was inspired by the idea of becoming our own leader and follower at the same time. We're less likely to get lost by doing so. Choosing our path based on someone else's ideas doesn't take us very far. We need to be the driver of our own "car". Have you ever been driving a car (a real one) while having someone trying to make you do things his/her way? Doesn't that make you confused? The same thing happens with life. If you want to succeed in anything then carefully "listen" to your own instincts and let them guide you.

Cotton Tree.

Cotton Tree small

There is something beautiful about all scars of whatever nature. A scar means the hurt is over, the wound is closed and healed, done with.
Harry Crews.

This is a new painting for my solo show in Puerto Rico inspired by Harry Crews' words above.

Title: Cotton Tree

Medium: Acrylic on canvas

I already shipped half of the pieces to Puerto Rico. Carlos Garcia, who's the owner of the gallery and also my friend, was very happy to see them. He sent me an e-mail as soon as the shipment arrived. If you can read Spanish here is the e-mail below. (Carmen is his wife):

Art World. Artworks.

My work was recently showed at Art Platform by Panamerican Art Projects. Visiting Art Platform was a great experience because of the high quality of the galleries/artists participating. I felt very proud to be part of it.

Head of Feathers small

The person in charge of organizing this edition of art Platform was Adam GrossI'm sure that a great part of the success of the event this year was due to Adam's work. I happen to know Adam from one of his visits to Cuba years ago, then we met again when I first moved to the USA. He's not only a rare combination of smart and down to earth man, but he's also someone who genuinely appreciates and understands art, diversity and quality. It's very encouraging having people like Adam in the art world here in LA.

Lisa Adams published an article at the Huffington Post about this art fair. I was happy to see that she agrees with the fact that this event was a good one. It also made me happy to see one of my pieces in the slide show that she includes with the article.

Art Platform generated not only good sales (which I highly appreciate) but also new interest in my work from new Galleries in California. That is inspiring and it makes me very excited. Since I had my children a few years ago my interaction with art galleries and other art institutions decreased because my focus was totally on raising my children. But now that they're a little older and spend more time in school I can finally reconnect with my art career and have a more active participation in the art world out there.

Very soon my work will also be part of PINTA a modern and contemporary art show in New York. I will be represented by Panamerican Art Projects as well (which by the way is a pleasure to work with).

My head is exploding with ideas that  have been accumulating for years; paintings, drawings, sculptures, artist's books..... I can't wait to materialize all of these ideas. I'm looking forward to 2012. It will be a year full of surprises :)

Bird Necklace.

Bird necklace small

Here is an embroidery bird necklace that I finished recently. This birdie is something special that I had in mind since I started my embroidery explorations. I wanted to make a detailed bird necklace with some gold accents, tiny beads and little stitches. As you can see the body of the bird is also a hand, which is holding a tiny yellow bird.

The big bird represents the idea of freedom, the hand represents what it takes to make our dreams come true and the tiny bird represents those special dreams that keep our inspiration alive.

This piece opens a new little door for new necklaces. I hope that I can find enough time to materialize those embroidered jewelry ideas that are popping up in my mind all the time :)

This necklace is already available on my Etsy Shop. (Sold out)

Have a great day!

Elsita

Little Paper Fox :)

Mister Fox miniature copy

Fox detail copy

This is something special that I made when I was illustrating my pop-up book Fables de la Fontaine. I had so much fun making it! I love working in miniature. The little shadow box measures 3" x 4" x 1 1/2". I have other little shadow boxes like this one ready to be filled with some sweet characters. I will do it as soon as I have a chance. The foxy above is now available on my Etsy shop.

Have a wonderful day!

Needle Punch Embroidered Fox Necklace.

Drawing copy 2

Fox run copy

Fox collar copy small

Since Ana Sender shared a link on this blog to a great piece that she embroidered in the technique of Punch Needle I have been fascinated by this new (to me) way to embroider. Thanks a lot for the link Ana!

After discovering this technique I immediately did my homework; I got the tools, I taught myself how to do it and here you see my first creation: a mischievous fox running as fast as he can :) The foxy measures about 6" from side to side. It would look beautiful with a black turtleneck sweater in the winter.

Needle Punch is great for jewelry. It's basically like making a rug but in miniature. I can't wait to use needle punch also in my embroidery artworks combined with other embroidery stitches. It will be a lot of fun!

Linda Repasky has a nice web-site where you can learn the basics of needle punch. She also sells the materials and tools needed for this technique in miniature. If you want to buy a single book to learn what you need to know about needle punch all you need is this one writen by Linda Repasky as well. There is also this web-site with an extensive list of needle punch supplies.

This fox will be running around over here on my Etsy shop until he finds his soulmate. (foxy already found his soulmate :)

Have a great Thursday!

Elsita :)
